POSITION TITLE:

P/T Detention Aide

DEPARTMENT:

$15.00/hour

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of entry-level support activities. Work includes varied processing and entry level security duties, sanitation, cleaning, utility and laundry duties, computer terminal operation when applicable to assigned functional area. Work will involve working around inmates, such as processing or in supervision. Incumbents follow prescribed security procedures and departmental regulations in performing related work as directed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The list of essential functions is intended to be representative of the tasks performed by an employee in this position. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.

  • Performs various entry-level support activities according to area and shift of assignment, i.e. laundry, sanitation, cleaning and utility duties;
  • Photographs prisoners detained at Police facilities using an electronic photograph system. 
  • Fingerprints prisoners by taking impressions using the manual ink method and/or the electronic live scan/biometric fingerprint scanners;
  • Searches prisoners using proper pat-down procedures and operates a hand held scanner during searches to ensure only permitted items are brought into the detention facility;
  • Asks screening questions and observes prisoners to ensure they are physically fit before admission to the detention facility;
  • Escorts prisoners to detainment cells and locks and unlocks cells; 
  • Performs security checks by inspecting detention cells at frequent intervals to ensure order, discipline and the safety of prisoners;
  • Maintains control of uncooperative and unruly detainees;
  • Makes appropriate notifications when prisoners are injured or need medical attention;
  • Uses a computer to update and maintain prisoner information in the Citizen Law Enforcement Analysis and Reporting (CLEAR) system;
  • Inventories personal property of prisoners and prepares receipts for items inventoried; Updates and maintains records to document distribution of meals, visitations and other activities in detention facilities;
  • Ensures the detention facility is kept clean and orderly and equipment is properly maintained;
  • May operate a vehicle when applicable to assigned functional area.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Reports to and is supervised by the Watch Commander and CHPD Administrative Commander.

WORKING HOURS:

This is a part-time position; hours will vary to include day, afternoon or evening as determined by position duties and specified department operations.

  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone
  • May require the performance of other essential and marginal functions
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment physical/drug screen examination and background check following a conditional employment offer

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED certification required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Compliance with requirement to adhere to uniformed dress code criteria; possess and maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment without any restrictions that affect job performance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines;
  • Basic knowledge of safety and security principles and practices;
  • Basic knowledge of law enforcement procedures;
  • Knowledge of applicable City and department policies, procedures, rules and regulation.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Critical thinking skills and demonstrate an ability to use logic and reasoning;
  • Basic proficiency in math;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office for data entry and creating/maintain spreadsheets;
  • Ability to meet assigned schedule on shift with punctual and consistent attendance;
  • Ability to use other department software including but not limited to CAPERS and LEADS;
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations;
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or scheduled form;
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand;
  • Ability to read and comprehend written information;
  • Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.

WORKING ENVIRONMENTS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by any an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort in to light to moderately heavy work, typically involving some combination of bending, reaching, stooping, or kneeling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderately heavy weight (50-100 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time standing or sitting at a workstation. May require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects. Tasks are performed in a corrections environment where proper provisions are in place in terms of employee security and protection. Due to the nature and location of the work environment, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements consistent with routine conditions in a corrections detainment environment, e.g., loud noise, pathogens, disruptive and/or potentially violent behavior.
