Police Officer (Part-Time)

This position supplements the full-time patrol force and is responsible for the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the enforcement of laws and ordinances. A significant portion of time involves public contact where discretion and tact is conscientiously exercised. Duties are performed in accordance with police procedures, practices, standards, policy, and regulations.

• Patrols to observe, prevent, or terminate unlawful acts.

• Assists in transporting, booking, and monitoring prisoners.  

• Responds to traffic or other accidents.  Secures scene; gives first aid and calls for medical assistance. Collects information and completes reports.

• Directs traffic. Enforces parking restrictions, controls crowds, and prevents blockage of public accesses.

• Operates radar unit; issues warnings/citations. May conduct tests for intoxication.

• Searches buildings, residences, and surrounding areas for criminal subjects.

• Responds to mutual aid requests.

• Serves warrants or summons.

• Assists in processing crime scenes.

• May assist in interrogations; makes court appearances.

• Provides crowd control at City events, including 4th of July.

• Graduation from high school or equivalent.

• Possession of Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board certified police officer credential.

• Must have prior experience as a police officer who left in good standing.

• Must have a passion for the police profession.

• Must be willing to work flexible hours (overnight, afternoon shifts and weekends and holidays).

• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local civil and criminal statutes and ordinances.

• Candidates may not be employed as a commissioned police officer at another governmental agency.

• Ability to meet physical requirements.

• Ability to exercise independent judgment and render objective decisions.

• Ability to write accurate reports.

• Maintain CPR certification and annually pass Firearms Course.

• Have valid Class D driver’s license.

• Specialized skills and Spanish speaking skills helpful.

A variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays with a minimum of 24 hours per month.
